UNIT TANK & LAND-ROVER from the 1973/74 series of ‘Doctor WhoStarring Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker

The longrunning Sci-Fo TV Series Dr Who was very popullar in the early to mide 1970s. When I started watching it was Jon Pertwee (the 3rd coctor) was in the role, followed by Tom Baker and the show achieved massive popualrity. Generally speaking aside from the Tardis and the recurring guest vilans the Daleks, Dr Who had very little memorabel hardware.

The Pertwee shows were larkgey srt in earth and involved the UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce). The Doctor was attached to them ad their sciemtific advisor. UNIT were pretty much the army and used contemporary technology. Mainly Land-Rovers and sometimes open-back lorries. In the ‘Robot’ story they have to work with the Doctor to imobilize a giant robot and the Brigadier proudly brings in a tank. This is one of the instances where the practicalitoes of the tv show were really apparent. The robot itself is quite impressive but the tank is clealry the Action Man toy tank available at the time and known to most young boys.

Unlike the Amderson shows that would get hold of toys or model.kits and work them up with additional detaling and weathering to amke the models credible on screen. But this looks like it has come straigut out of the box and is being pushed hesitantly into shot. it is seen only fleetingly, but it is one of those thing that was laughable at the time. In creating tjis artwork i have painted the Action Man tank - not a 'real' scorpom tank.

You’d get the Brigadeer and Sgt Benton and 3 other generic unit soldiers as seem
